A survey conducted in 10 European countries in March 2017 provided a snapshot of how citizens felt in regard to their mobility: 58% of Europeans are decidedly unhappy with the volumes of traffic on their roads.
However, 72% of respondents declared they would be willing to use public transport “more often”, thereby reducing the use of automobiles, if investment was made to improve services and routes. Not only that: 81% of Europeans would like to see fully-fledged smart technology enabling the one-stop purchase of travel documents, while 78% called for better connections between bus stations and train stations. For 84% of respondents who travel to work, a more
efficient rail service between urban peripheries and urban centres would improve their quality of life; for 82% it would mean safer, less hazardous travel, and for 80% it would add value to their own time.
Our clients, in Italy and all over Europe, are giving an unequivocal signal of the way ahead in affirming that public mobility is a determining factor in well-being.
The decision to hold EXPO Ferroviaria 2017 in Milan, therefore, is much more than symbolic. The dynamism of today’s Milan and Lombardy is proof that a fast, finely articulated and comfortable rail network will grow until it becomes a driver of sustainable mobility. Trenord’s experience is emblematic in this respect: 2,300 trains a day, over 400 stations served and 736,000 clients transported every day, with average annual growth of 3% for weekdays and 5% for weekends and holidays. Between now and 2025 we’ll be putting 160 new trains into service, which, thanks to investment of over 1.6 billion euros by Lombardy
region, will bring innovation and modernity to the public transport sector.
In Lombardy, every sector of the market is growing. Besides commuting, rail travel is increasingly serving the new requirements of passengers travelling to airports, the suburbs of metropolitan Milan, and across borders. It’s increasingly becoming an option for tourism and leisure too.
We were delighted to be invited to act as Host Partners for this event, which is also taking place in the Trenord yards on the Milan-Florence line.
EXPO Ferroviaria 2017 in Milan is much more than a trade show. It’s a major incubator of ideas and innovation. And – let’s hope – an accelerator of change.
