The Group Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane is the largest company in Italy and the most important industrial entity in the railway sector. On a network of over 16,700 kilometres of lines, it runs more than 8 thousand trains a day, transporting roughly 600 million passengers and 50 million tonnes of freight a year.
Ferrovie Italiane, a leader in Europe in terms of safety, equipped its new HS/HC lines with the European Railway Traffic Management System(ERTMS)/European Train Control System (ETCS) level 2, which was designed and developed entirely in Italy and selected by the EU as the European reference standard for new transnational High Speed networks. FS Italiane was the first to use it in the world, winning the Best Paper Award in 2006 in Montreal, an important recognition from the international railway community.
